Starting point
A 1984 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit had everything that makes a Rolls-Royce, and unfortunately a little more: mould. Anyone who approached the car noticed a musty to sharp, acrid smell. Home remedies brought only brief relief, just enough for a business appointment. Then the smell returned, eyes watered, and within minutes a suit took on the musty odour of the interior. Few people are aware of how harmful mould and spores can be to health. The source of the smell and its cause had to be found and professionally eliminated.
Work
The investigation began in the boot, where the infestation was immediately visible: mould on the leather piping, on the boot lining and along the edge of the inner lid. A rubber seal that had become brittle was suspected as a possible cause and had to be followed up, since otherwise any disinfection would have been in vain. In the passenger compartment nothing could be seen at first glance, but the smell betrayed the infestation. All the floor mats showed the beginnings of mould on the underside, the parcel shelf was covered in black mould, and a reddish type of mould had settled in the glovebox.
Result
One thing is certain: with mould in a car, surface cleaning is not enough. As long as the source of moisture has not been found and fixed, any disinfection remains ineffective. Only once the cause and all affected areas have been professionally treated does the interior of a classic have a chance of becoming odour-free again.
