Porsche 911 turbo Convertible

Starting point

With the winter break for seasonal cars from 31 October, the time of restorations and cosmetic upgrades begins at the workshop in Schwaikheim. This 1987 Porsche 911 turbo Convertible was to have its paint optimised and refined with the LZ 730 brilliance sealant. In addition, the complete leather interior was to be restored in its original shade with blue contrasting piping on the driver’s and passenger seats. The leather showed fading, surface scratches and a burn hole on the rear jump seat; even so, neither replacing the leather nor upholstery work was necessary. Door panels, gear gaiter and gear knob had clear signs of use. Holes from an old phone mount in the centre console had to be closed, the instrument cowl was scratched as is typical of the model, and the seam on the leather steering wheel was open. The biggest task was sourcing the original Porsche carpet set in the special colour Linen.

Work

All leather seats, trims and door panels were removed; during dismantling, the original shade for mixing the pigments was found in places that had been protected from UV radiation. The entire leather interior including the blue piping was repigmented. On the gear knob, chafe marks and scratches were removed and restored with original pigments, the scratches on the instrument cowl were filled and pigmented, and the steering wheel seam was completely resewn. After a long search, the original carpet set in Linen was sourced and fitted. On the hood, the plastic window that had gone cloudy was polished clear again. Finally, the paint was corrected and sealed with LZ 730.

Result

After completion of all the work, the 1987 Porsche 911 turbo was, according to the report at the time, in collector’s condition: a completely restored interior with the original carpet set in Linen, repigmented leather including the blue piping, a clear hood window and paint sealed with LZ 730.
