Starting point
A 1987 Porsche 911 turbo Convertible came to the workshop in Schwaikheim for its winter break as a seasonal car. Planned were a paint optimisation followed by the LZ 730 brilliance sealant and the restoration of the complete leather interior in its original shade with blue contrasting piping on the driver’s and passenger seats. The leather was faded, dry and scratched, and the rear jump seat had a burn hole. Even so, no upholstery work was needed and the leather could be kept. Door panels, gear gaiter and gear knob showed clear signs of use, the centre console had holes from an old phone mount, the instrument cowl bore the scratches from fingernails and rings typical of the model, and a seam on the leather steering wheel was open. The complete carpet set had to be renewed, and in the original special colour Linen. The plastic window in the hood was also to be made clear again.
Work
All leather seats, trims and door panels were removed. In areas protected from the sun the original shade was found, and the pigments were mixed to match it. The complete interior including the blue piping was repigmented. On the gear knob, chafe marks and scratches were removed and restored with original leather pigments, the scratches on the instrument cowl were filled and pigmented, and the steering wheel seam was completely resewn. The original Porsche carpet set in Linen was sourced and fitted after a long search and many refusals. The plastic window in the hood was polished clear. Finally, the paint was optimised and sealed with the LZ 730 brilliance sealant.
Result
The interior is completely restored; leather, piping, steering wheel and carpet are back to original condition. After completion of all the work, the 911 turbo was, according to the report at the time, in collector’s condition, rounded off by the paint sealant.
