Starting point
The BMW Alpina B3 S had been restored at great expense and came back to its owner in a condition that called the investment into question. The freshly painted car had been massively damaged during polishing. The clear coat was heavily marred, and on the edge of the bonnet it had already been polished through completely. In its report at the time, the business points to something many people are not aware of: clear coat does not have unlimited thickness. Anyone who wants to rework a result like this twice will sand right through the paint. The legal right to rectification is of little help in such cases if the party responsible lacks the necessary care. The Alpina decorative stripes, which really should have been removed, made the work even harder.
Work
On the heavily marred paint there was hardly any material left for a correction, so every surface had to be worked with corresponding caution. The work was like walking on eggshells. The business always takes plenty of time, but this case was extreme even after what was then 22 years of experience.
Result
Despite the polished-through edge and the little remaining coating thickness, the paint of the Alpina could be restored. The pictures from the report at the time document the scratched initial condition and the result of the correction. The business and the customer were relieved that the rescue succeeded.
