Mercedes-AMG GT R

Starting point

The AMG GT R in the special colour green hell magno, available exclusively for this model, refers to its development on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, the “Green Hell”. So that future drives would not take too much of a toll on the paint, the car was to receive a matt paint protection film. High-gloss film was planned only for the high-gloss areas such as the carbon roof and the sill blades, followed by the Ceramic Carbon coating. The paint needed protecting from stone chips, insect etching, bird droppings, tree resin and general dirt. On close inspection it also turned out that the paint is not purely matt but satin matt, with a slight sheen.

Work

Before wrapping, all insect residues had to be removed; they had already left etching on the matt paint. A gentle insect and dirt remover dissolved them piece by piece, because stains under the film are not acceptable. The wheels were cleaned with a wheel cleaner, which may also be used on ceramic brakes, centre locks and sensitive wheel hubs. After sampling the matt film from all sides and under different lighting conditions, we wrapped the front bumper, bonnet, wings, left and right sills with sill blades, A-pillars, roof and areas of the rear diffuser. The tyres received a plastic and rubber care product for long-lasting colour depth. Finally everything was coated with the Ceramic Carbon coating, including the paint protection film.

Result

The GT R left the workshop with its paintwork wrapped and coated. A note from the report at the time: even a coated and wrapped matt paint is not completely immune to iron fallout, in summer as in winter, although salt and water cause more iron fallout in winter. For this case there is iron fallout remover in gel form, which can be used on matt paint protection films and matt paints. Polishing, clay or scrubbing must be avoided on these surfaces.
